Smart Polder is a solution that combines water management with the generation and efficient use of renewable energy. In the Smart Polder, the pumping away of surface water is combined with the extraction of heat and cold from that surface water. Energy is transported via a heat exchanger by means of a ‘Smart City Thermal Grid’ with which homes, offices and other buildings can be heated or cooled.
The extraction of heat from surface water has a number of additional advantages. The reduction in the temperature of the water means that it has a cooling effect on the environment and helps to reduce urban heat stress. In addition, a decrease in the water temperature reduces the incidence of botulism and fish mortality.
